Going to Mars, but Staying Close to Home

How crazy is it to dedicate your life so much to science and space that you will lock yourself in an isolation chamber with 6 others for over 100 days. These people are locking themselves away from the real world, into chambers just for the sake of seeing what it WOULD be like if we sent people to mars. The only problem is, they are still right here on Earth. The next test starting next year will last 520 days!! I cant imagine devoting yourself to such a study.
